The capital of the Soviet Ural. In October 26, 1917 was established the Soviet power. Since May, 1918 in Ipatyev's house lived abdicated emperor of Russia Nikolay II with his family. On the night of 17 of July, 1918 the tsar family was executed by shooting according to the decision of the Ural Soviet which was supported by Lenin and Sverdlov and their corpses were buried in the suburb. In July 25 regiments of Czecho-Slovak corps which were united into the Yekaterinburg group of forces headed by major-general R.Gaida entered the city. In summer of 1919 Yekaterinburg was occupied by the regiments of 21st and 28th divisions of the second Red Army. On the 1st of May in 1920 were installed the first communistic monuments on all large squares of the city: the monument to the liberate mankind was installed on Verh-Issetskaya square, on the square 1905 was installed the memorial to the free mankind instead of the memorial to Alexander II (called "Vanka Goliy" among people), the marble bust of K.Marks was transferred to the square of "Narodnaya mest" . Since 1923 Yekaterinburg became the centre of the Ural region, including the whole territory of the Ural from the Arctic ocean to the steppes of Kazakhstan. During the former discussion were offered the following names: Krasnouralsk, Platinogorsk, Uralgorod, Andreiburg, etc. The name Sverdlovsk in honor of Bolshevik Ya.M.Sverdlov. In 1932 finished the session of the Academy of science of the USSR which approved an organization of the Ural branch. The first chairman of the UBAS of the USSR became geochemist and mineralogist A.E.Fersman(1883-1945). In 1961 was organized the region - Large Ural - as the result of new economic division into districts. Because of it the new inter-regional institutions were created. In 1971 on the basis of the branch of the Academy of science was created the Ural scientific centre (USC). On the 18th of November, 1973 Yekaterinburg was 250, that is why took place the celebration of the birthday of the city. The revival Yekaterinburg In 1991 the historical name was Yekaterinburg returned to the city. In 1992 according to the President decree A.M. Chernetsky became the head of the city. In 1995 the regulations of Yekaterinburg was adopted. In 1999 in Yekaterinburg was the 5th Congress of the World-wide federation of the clubs of UNESCO. The international business missions were the important instruments of the development of direct contacts between business circles of the city and foreign partners. Yekaterinburg actively used the possibilities of the grants of international funds and programs for the realization of municipal projects, developed relations in the sphere of humanitarian cooperation. In 2000 in the international centre "Investigations of the problems of future" (France) was open an exhibition "In the search of the ideal city". Were selected 12 "ideal cities" on the basis of competition including Yekaterinburg. On September, 2001 was created Privolzhsko-Ural military region with it centre in Yekaterinburg. In 2003 during the first All-Russian competition on the financial improving of a country Yekaterinburg won in nomination "the best city of Russia". The head of he city A.M. Chernetskiy represented the experience of the reform of municipal administration in the Soviet of Europe in Strasburg. In 2003 Yekaterinburg celebrated its 280-year jubilee.
