The mining city
The stone-cutting factory started up in Yekaterinburg in 1751. Sooner the first institution in Russia which managed gold-mining was organized - Yekaterinburg mining expedition of plant industry, later the senate established the expedition on prospecting of semiprecious stones and marble quarrying, which was headed by major-general Yakov Dannenberg, on application of the Academy of Art. In 1772 the city was visited by the expedition headed by naturalist P.S. Pallas. In 1781 the Perm region ruled by governor-general was established. That time Yekaterinburg got an official status of the city. The town hall was reorganized into the city council with 2 burgomasters and 4 municipal councilors. In 1783 the emblem of the city was approved. The large Siberian highway crossed the city: Moscow - Kazan - Sarapul - Okhansk - Perm - Kungur - Ekateriburg - Tumen - Tobolsk. According to the first census of the population in Yekaterinburg in 1787 there lived 9276 people.
In 1797 the regional body of administration of mining industry was restored in Yekaterinburg.
The infantry regiment, which had been formed in Yekaterinburg in 1796, took part in military actions against French army of Vityabsk.
In 1819 Yekaterinburg was visited by Alexander I, who examine the mint place, the laboratory of castling gold, factory hospital and Novo-Tihvinskiy cloister.

In 1831 was established the Ural mining administration. Since 1837 up to 1856 the mining administration was headed by the "God and Tsar of the Ural ridge" general V.A.Glinka (1790-1862). During his ruling Ekaternburg was rapidly growing on the pick of Gold-rush. The appearance of the city was changed. The new beautiful architectural ensembles were appeared: the Palace of Rastorguev - Haritonov on Voznesenskaya hill, Zotov's, Ryazanov's, Kazancev's and others farmhouses. The mining administration also added coloring to the city. The interior of the buildings kept up a style of Classicism. The working of the deposits of semiprecious stones - ametists, emeralds, sappires - changed the city into the centre of stone-cutting art. Yekaterinburg had become the centre of culture.
